Scientific Computing

This service is a combination of several individual services that are related in terms of usage.

• Desktop computing: For quick and interactive scientific processing avdn office automation we provide a desktop with high cpu, ram and storage capacity. Each year we evaluate the requirements for such equipment and initiate a min-competitie to acquire yearly a new, up to date batch. Currently the systems provide 6 cores with hyperthreading, 16G ram and approximately 8TB of RAID 5 storage. Maintenance and upgrades to these systems are included.
• Server computing: To allow heavy scientific computing for small groups of researchers we advice in the acquisition of server hardware in terms of requirements set by the scientific computing needs and available funds. We perform the actual acquisition, installation, configuration and take care of the maintenance and upgrades.
• High performance computing: For the most heavy scientific computing needs for individuals and groups we advice in the acquisition of HPC hardware in terms of the mix of requirements from the potential users. We perform the actual acquisition, installation, configuration and take care of the maintenance and upgrades.

There is a standard set of scientific data reduction and analysis software available (see the list). Additional software can be installed locally by the user or system wide by the administrators, provided it is useful for more than one user.

All systems are managed by the IT Department, but local modifications are possible and can be requested though the helpdesk forms.
